Forrester: Ownership of the Business Technology Budget Still Lives Very Much With the CIO

Here is a little good news for CIOs who feel they are losing control to non-tech execs making liberal use of their corporate credit cards.

According to Forrester, while CMOs have certainly taken on a larger role when it comes to influencing business technology, data from a recent research report reveals that ownership of the budget has not shifted as much as some may expect:

•    Business-only accounts for about 6 percent of US new tech purchases and is rising slowly towards 7 percent.

•    About 10 percent (and rising) of US new tech purchases start with the business but shift to the CIO.

•    More than one-third of new US tech purchases will be made by the CIO and business together.

•    CIO-team-led purchases that involve business will shrink from 27 percent in 2010 to 25 percent in 2014.

•    IT-only purchases will fall from 27 percent to 22 percent in 2014.
